(Meta) A Yobuko Tradition.

Some extra info relating to Sagakeen and the latest Splat Fest in Japan.

The city of Yobuko holds an annual festival called "Yobuko Ouzunabi" in the first weekend of June, where all of the townspeople are divided into two local groups and play tug-of-war, using a large rope (15 cm diameter, 400m long) with a clump of woven straw marking the mid-point. The two groups are referred to as Mountain (岡) and Sea (浜). According to the local legend, if the Mountain team wins, it means there will be a good harvest that year. If the Sea team wins, it means there will be a good catch that year. For the 2015 event, the Mountain team won.

Japan's latest splat fest of "Land Food vs Sea Food" mirrors this tradition.

Sagakeen

"Sagakeen" general

There's a new Splatoon-related event going on in Japan, "Sagakeen".
Saga is the name of a prefecture in Japan, in the South-western area.
Yobuko is/was the name of a town in the Saga prefecture (in 2005, Yobuko merged with the nearby city of Karatsu)

Although not as popular as other cities in Japan, it is known for its specialty dishes, Ikizukuri squid and Saga beef, which also ties into the current Japanese splat fest theme: "Food of the land vs Food of the sea". The prefecture of Saga and the Nintendo company have worked together to create an event called "Sagakeen", bringing Splatoon-themed events and goods. The event takes place in 2 cities:

  • Saga prefecture, Yobuko
    December 1st 2015 - January 31st 2016
    (2 months)
  • Tokyo
    November 18th 2015 - November 24th 2015
    (1 week)

Some highlights of both events are:
  • Splatoon-themed Christmas trees

  • Splat fest shirts!

Food of the land & Food of the sea!
(shirts say "Saga" on the front)
  • Splatoon Square

    - selling limited edition goods, and other souvenirs
  • A "Squid Spinner".

A method of drying food considered to be a Yobuko specality, splatoon-themed
  • Meet Spike!

"You know, Hadomisaki is known for its grilled sea snails"

There's a ton of stuff on the pages. I'll try to do more translations of the events if there's any interest.
