Some extra info relating to Sagakeen and the latest Splat Fest in Japan.
The city of Yobuko holds an annual festival called
"Yobuko Ouzunabi" in the first weekend of June, where all of the townspeople are divided into two local groups and play tug-of-war, using a large rope (15 cm diameter, 400m long) with a clump of woven straw marking the mid-point. The two groups are referred to as
Mountain (岡) and
Sea (浜). According to the local legend, if the Mountain team wins, it means there will be a good harvest that year. If the Sea team wins, it means there will be a good catch that year. For the 2015 event, the Mountain team won.
Japan's latest splat fest of "Land Food vs Sea Food" mirrors this tradition.
